Among the citrus fruits, the yuzu takes on a special role, because it has two rather great characteristics: First of all, it doesn't mind the cold very much, even tolerating frost down to temperatures of -10 degrees Celsius. But above all, its fruits, which are somewhat reminiscent of lemons that have gone out of shape, have a very interesting and complex flavour that carries both the sweetness of the mandarin and the acidity of the lime, but adds a tart note on top that is somewhat reminiscent of bergamot.
In Asia, the yuzu, which is probably a hybrid of the Ichang lemon and the mandarin, has been cultivated for over 2000 years - its tree reaches heights of up to three metres (when you see it in Europe, it is usually much smaller). It bears its fruit from October to December, and its flavour nuances make it an important protagonist of Asian cuisine.
Which brings us to our new soap: for this one, we teamed up with Izakaya Ooki, a restaurant not too far from our shop on Ankerstrasse, where you can eat just as well as in an izakaya in Tokyo, Osaka or Fukuoka. Side note: you can find the yuzu on the menu there if you do a little searching!
The second important ingredient in soap is distillate from the hinoki tree. In Japan, the wood of the hinoki tree is used to build palaces, temples and shrines. It is said to have a relaxing effect, it has a tart, somewhat smoky note, but at the same time it smells nice and refreshing.
Together, the two scents create a subtle scent with character. It is invigorating but complex, smelling exotic without being overbearing - just as you know it from Soeder soaps. Please note: Hinoki Yuzu is limited.
